An immediately-recognisable symbol of New Zealand, the hei tiki is a pendant in the form of a human figure that is seen amongst other things as a symbol of fertility and as a protective amulet. Each hei tiki is meant to be a unique piece conforming to a general style, and the piece contains subtle symbolism in its eyes, tongue and hands. The tiki normally has three fingers on each hand and three toes on each foot, symbolising the Three Baskets of Knowledge- the knowledge of borth, life and death. When a fourth digit is added, as with this piece, it represents knowledge of Rarohenga - the Maori underworld - and thus a wearer of deep spiritual understanding and power.

Measuring in at 99mm long and 54mm wide at its widest point, with a thickness of 10mm, this piece features the tiki in a classical squatted position grasping its thighs. The mouth is heart-shaped, reflecting one who speaks with love, and the solid nature of the tongue represents a gentle and plain speaker (a forked tongue would represent a powerful orator). The piece is carved from a beautiful piece of high-quality kawakawa jade of deep colour and minimal pattern, allowing the design to fully express itself in the stone, and the eyes are carved from sections of paua shell. Suspension is by a himotoshi or hidden hole at the back of the head, and the piece is designed to hang vertically.

This is a large and striking piece, guaranteed to attract notice no matter what kind of outfit it's worn with.
