Nephrite jade has a tendency to form in layers, and those layers can sometimes produce beautiful effects of schiller and variable translucency that can make for wonderful visual patterns in a piece of stone. This example of that effect was carved from a river pebble of jade, and showcases the rich tones of the jade that might otherwise be missed due to its depth. The piece is a small pectoral, or pendant designed to hang sideways across the chest, rather than up-and-down like a drop pendant. Its patterns are reminiscent of river rapids, and its background tone is a luxuriously-rich dark green nudging the edge of being black.
Measuring in at 41mm high and 77mm wide at its widest point, this piece is thick and robust, with a glassy finish that shows off its tones and translucency to excellent effect. The dual suspension common to pectoral pendants balances its weight, making it very light and comfortable to wear, and allowing it to suit even smaller wearers quite well. A true stunner in person.
