Also known as shining cuckoo jade, pipiwharauroa is any jade that demonstrates the silvery light effect known as chatoyancy - just as the feathers of the shining cuckoo do. It embodies tones everywhere from the paler greens and green-blues, as in this piece, through to rich and dark greens and greys. This piece was carved from a natural pebble of chatoyant jade found in the Hokitika River, and sports frosty, mist-like patterns that ripple and move in the light as it's turned from side to side.
Measuring in at 56mm long and 24mm wide at its widest point, this is an understated piece that can easily blend into a pale-toned or outfit - or stand out plendidly against a stronger-coloured ensemble. Its size and light weight makes it a comfortable piece for even the smallest wearer.
